R& D Tips
Each sensor caters to a certain market group in its own right. You may find that some of your items overlap with others, but you must tailor your products to a certain niche. The following four purchasing factors are prioritized by customers in each segment: age, positioning, price, and dependability (MTBF).
Your R&D person would have direct control over three of the four criteria (price is determined by marketing), and would collaborate with marketing and manufacturing to develop optimal sensors that satisfy the needs of customers.
The perceived age of the product is determined by the buyer. When a product is changed in research and development, the apparent age of that product is reduced by half.
When doing research and development from Round 1 to Round 8, for all rounds, we should reduce the mean time between failures (MTBF) to the bare minimum of the range in order to save money and boost contribution margins. This is the most important Profit Driving tool since reliability only accounts for a tiny part of the customer’s purchasing criteria (see all the 5 segments to see details, in Capstone Courier Report every year, page 5-9).
Maintain in mind that if we want safe tactics, we need keep the MTBF at the average level. With the exception of the Performance sector, where we maintain the maximum MTBF at 27.000, we pick the minimum MTBF for each of the other four segments, such as Traditional at 14.000, Low End at 12.000, High End at 20.000, and Size at 16.000.
For Performance, we set the maximum MTBF at 27.000 since the purchase criterion for this sector is 43 percent. Take a look at the following illustration. Another thing to keep in mind is that the statistics for each Industry vary when the game is produced for a new class or group, so we must double-check the figures from the Industry Report and the Capstone Courier after each round (year). If we wish to compete in three or four segments (rather than all five), the Low End and Tradition segments are the most promising and lucrative. They have the greatest potential for profit.
We must first examine the reports for Rounds 1, 2, and 3, and then in Rounds 3 and 4, we will pick the least competitive and least profitable of the group to be left out of the group. Adding one additional section, for example, Low End, is beneficial (often in Round 1).
Creating two additional segments, such as Low End and Traditional, will result in more profits in subsequent rounds, such as Rounds 5-6-7, and 8. (It is common for us to build New Traditional in Round 2). In Round 3, we have the opportunity to develop a new High-End sector (more profitable). However, if there is enough competition in the High End, we should consider creating a new sector in SIZE (better than Performance – high cost).
TIPS: Only ONE time in Year 3 should the Low-End sensor be repositioned. The initial Low-End sensor should only be re-positioned once for the duration of the game, and not to the Ideal Spot as is now recommended. Because Ideal Offsets is 0 for this segment, the sweet spot for the Traditional segment is the same as the sweet spot for the Ideal and Drift segments. The High End, Performance, and Size divisions all have sweet spots in the middle of the spectrum between Drift and Ideal Sport. Note: If finding the Sweet Spot with half way is too expensive and takes too much time to research and develop, we may choose option 4 with a third of the way between Drift and Ideal places.
We update the original Low End just once for the duration of the game, and then in Year 3 we upgrade to the specifications of the Year 4 Sweet Spot (PFMN 4.1 – SIZE 16.3 or PFMN 4.9 – SIZE 155).
During Year 1, a new Low-End section will be developed, with the Sweet Spot specification coming in Year 4. Please keep in mind that all of the statistics you will need to input into your game will be different from those in this article; you should get numbers from the Industry Report, enter 1 line in an Excel file, and then generate your own game figures. Only Round 0 – Strategy 1 –> Round 0 – Strategy 2 —> After that, all of the tables will be updated.
Note: If there are any items that do not need Age as 0-1 year, we do not have to update them every year; instead, we may update them to Pfmn and Size as 2-3 years after the initial release date. The items will then be able to better satisfy customer needs and sell more effectively.
