What is a Resume?

A resume is a document that summarizes the skills, education, and work experience of an applicant. A good resume should be concise and easy to read – while also providing detailed information about each job held. A resume is most often used to apply for jobs or internships but can also be used in a job interview.

What is the Purpose of a Resume?

The purpose of a resume is to summarize the skills, education, and work experience of an applicant. The resume should also contain contact information so that employers can find out more about you by getting in touch with your references or contacting you directly.

What Should I Included In My Resume?

Header:

Your contact information should be at the top of your resume, including your name and phone number.

Education:

List all of the colleges you have attended along with any degree(s) earned below it. Graduation dates are not necessary unless they apply specifically to when work experience was obtained. If schooling has been interrupted by military service or other reasons beyond control, make sure there’s a note about why in the education section so recruiters know everything they need to when evaluating potential candidates.

Work Experience:

Begin listing jobs starting from most recent and work backward. Use reverse chronological order to list positions in the following format:

-Job Title

-Company Name

-City, State (or Country) of Employer

Start Date/End Date for each job held. If you are a student or recent graduate listing internships on your resume, do not include the start date; instead, use the end date so that recruiters know how long you were employed at that particular company. In addition, be sure to note where you worked before starting your internship by adding ‘before current position’ after the title of an employer when applicable. Once again, if something interrupts this pattern such as military service or other time away from employment, there will need to be a note about it in the education section to make sure recruiters have all of the necessary information.

Skills:

Add skills that are relevant to your experience, if any. This should be an accomplishment-based list and not just a bunch of words describing what you can do or say from memory without much evidence for how well they were accomplished (e.g., “Outgoing”). For instance, instead of listing ‘French,’ include ‘Fluent French speaker with written comprehension.’ Here is a link to job title keywords as one example – but remember, just because something’s on this list doesn’t mean it belongs on every resume!

References:

Lastly, for recruiters to contact references about applicants, not everyone will want their full name listed on a public document such as a Resume – so don’t forget ‘References available upon request.’ This should always go at the end of the Resume listing all work experience – regardless of whether there is anything else included after it or not.

What Should Not Be Included In My Resume?

It is expected that a resume will only contain relevant information. Therefore, it’s important to omit irrelevant or outdated personal data such as marital status and gender. It is also considered inappropriate for one’s age or date of birth to appear on a resume. Finally, opinionated statements are best saved for interviews – so do not include any political affiliations in your writing!

Common Mistakes to Avoid While Writing a Resume

-Leaving out contact information

-Listing irrelevant or outdated personal data such as marital status and gender

-Including opinionated statements that are best saved for interviews.

Tips for Writing an Excellent Resume

-Use a neat and easy to read fonts such as Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman

-Include contact information at the top of your resume. Be sure that you include both your name and phone number so employers can get in touch with you anytime they want.

-Don’t embellish – if something is noteworthy, be certain it’s listed but know when not to list an achievement (e.g., “French speaker” instead of just listing French). It should only contain what might matter for getting a job offer, even though there are exceptions!

-Be specific about how long jobs were held, where they took place, and mention any interruptions in employment history accordingly

-Provide more detail on strengths: what did you do, how well did it work out?

-Include only relevant job experience (e.g., don’t list jobs from when you were a student) and avoid listing irrelevant or outdated personal data such as marital status and gender

-Include skills that are relevant to your experience, if any. This should be an accomplishment-based list, not just a bunch of words describing what you can do without much evidence for how well they were accomplished

-Use reverse chronological order by starting with the most recent position held first followed by previous positions in order

-Include education and any awards, honors, or achievements you’re proud of, including (e.g., ‘Member of the National Honor Society)

-Be sure to include skills that are relevant to your experience, if any, with an accomplishment based list instead of a bunch of words describing what you can do from memory without much evidence for how well they were accomplished

-Provide contact information at the top as well as references available upon request at the bottom. It should also be followed by ten tips for writing an excellent resume – but these don’t need to be numbered!
